The Grimm Code.

What Grimm means, the five things we actually mean, how bad is bad, how we treat the places we go — and the one line that never moves. Two minutes, then you'll get the jokes.

What is Grimm?

Something becomes Grimm when everything starts going wrong — and the day turns unforgettable because of it.

It's not suffering. It's not a survival badge. It's the wet, cold, slightly ridiculous middle of an adventure that stopped cooperating — and got better for it.

And when it all goes at once? That's Grimm to the Brimm.

The Grimm Way

Five things we actually mean.

  1. 01

    Earn it

The good stuff sits at the far end of some effort. Walk the extra hour. The view was never going to come to the car park.

  2. 02

    Share it

Pass the flask, the map, the spare dry socks. A story kept to yourself is only half-finished. The fire gets better with more people around it.

  3. 03

    Laugh first

When the tent goes over at 3am, you get to pick the first sound you make. Pick the laugh. The complaining can wait; it always does.

  4. 04

    Leave no trace

Take the photo, take the story, take the rubbish. Leave the place exactly as you'd want to find it. This isn't up for debate.

  5. 05

    Go again

Every soaked, sleepless, everything-broke trip ends the same way — someone mutters "right, when are we doing that again?" The misery fades fast. The wanting to go back never quite does.

The Grimm Scale

How bad was it,
really?

A rough, unscientific measure. Pick a level. Be honest.

Level 3 / 5

Definitely Grimm

Dry bag was not, in fact, a dry bag. Sleeping bag has opinions now. You've stopped checking the forecast because what's the point.

How we tread

Embrace the discomfort. Don't create it.

What we do, and don't yet
  • Use it longer.

Buy less. Patch it. Take it again.

  • Leave it better.

Pack out what you brought — and a bit you didn't.

  • Respect the wild.

Stay on the trail. Small, legal fires. Give wildlife room.

Stay safe out there

Grimm, not stupid.

A soaked, sleepless night is a story. A real emergency is not. Turning back isn't failing the day — it's the reason there's a next one.

  1. 01Check the real forecast — and believe it.
  2. 02Tell someone your route and when you'll be back.
  3. 03Set a turnaround time. Honour it, summit or not.
  4. 04Weather turning? Go down, not up.
  5. 05Plan for the least experienced person, not the strongest.
  6. 06Everyone comes home. That line never moves.
